When should I carry out a DSEAR assessment?
It is a legal requirement to have a DSEAR assessment if your workplace handles dangerous substances.
If you are making modifications to your workplace (e.g. expanding production with a new line or process, changing equipment, or changing materials) then you should carry out a DSEAR assessment at the start of this process - typically during the conceptual design stage before any equipment is ordered. This will allow you to identify any hazards and try to eliminate them at the design stage, minimise any hazardous zones (and therefore expensive ATEX equipment requirements), specify the correct ATEX equipment where residual zones remain, and include provision for any explosion protection where required.
One of the biggest mistakes we see is the DSEAR assessment being conducted too late (e.g. after equipment has been ordered or at the commissioning stage), which can result in significant project delays and overspend.
